A woman has died after being struck by two cars at an intersection Melbourne, adding to one of the deadliest years on record on the state’s roads.

The woman was struck by the vehicles at the intersection of Hallenstein St and Hopkins St in Footscray, just west of the city’s CBD, at about 10pm on Sunday.

Despite desperate attempts from paramedics to save her life, the yet-to-be identified woman died at the scene.

Both drivers remained at the scene of the collision uninjured and are assisting police investigations.

Victoria Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.

The death adds to the 269 lives lost in a horror year on Victorian roads that has already passed last year’s total of 240.

Two weeks prior to the Footscray collision, four people were killed when their Kia Carnival burst into flames after hitting a tree in the Piries region, near Mansfield in northwest Victoria.

Police believe the seasonal agricultural workers from the Pacific Islands were returning to Mansfield, where they were employed by crop grower Murphy Fresh, from a friend’s house in nearby Macs Cove and may have been drinking.

One of the occupants, Samoan David Gasologa, had only recently become engaged.

‘The fact we’ve also surpassed lives lost for all of last year and reached the highest number of fatalities in 15-years is just truly tragic,’ Glenn Weir, the state’s Road Policing Assistant Commissioner, said shortly after the accident.

‘This should be a wake up call to everyone – don’t think that road trauma can’t happen to you, because it can.’
