Florida Teens Hailed as Heroes for Rescuing Driver Whose Truck Plunged Into Canal

Two Florida teens jumped into a Broward County canal this week and pulled a driver out of his truck after it plunged into the water.

The incident happened just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday, WSVN reported.

Tony Cooper and Elijah Hodge, both 13, were walking home from a Dollar Tree when they saw the driver lose control and drive into the canal.

“We rushed and took off our shoes and stuff,” Cooper told the station. “We literally jumped on the hood and then we took off the seat belt and then we pulled them out. I started screaming at him because he was heavy while he was in the car. We screaming, he woke up, we helped him get out of the car and after that, he was on the hood and then we pulled him onto the grass.”

Broward County deputies and North Lauderdale Fire Rescue units responded to the scene and took the driver, who wasn’t identified, to a hospital, where he was in stable condition.

A witness to the rescue, Dorothy Borgelin, told WSVN she heard a loud noise.

“Sure enough, I saw there was a car – a pickup truck – that was going under the water,” she said. “Then there were two kids, they were on the other side, and then they just jumped into the water. One of them went on top of the hood and the other one was in the water, trying to pull the man out. They did an amazing job to save the man’s life.”

North Lauderdale Mayor Samson Borgein issued a statement praising the boys “and their heroic efforts.”

“I will be reaching out to them and their families to formally recognize their bravery,” he said.

City officials said they plan on recognizing the two teens at an upcoming commission meeting in June.

Authorities have not yet determined what happened to send the truck into the canal.
