Florida Teacher Charged With DUI After Crashing Into School Fence

A Florida school teacher was arrested on a driving under the influence charge this week after he crashed his car into a school fence on the first day of school.

A Hernando County Sheriff’s deputy found Philip Scire, 32, unconscious just after 11 a.m. on Tuesday behind the steering wheel of his car, which was still in gear, the sheriff’s office said. The deputy also noted “several empty single-serving alcohol containers within reach” in the vehicle.

Scire was taken for an evaluation at a hospital, where another deputy arrived to speak with him. That deputy noted that “Scire smelled of alcohol.”

Scire refused several attempts by the deputy to get consent to draw blood to determine blood alcohol content or to see if he was under the influence of other substances.

Once released from the hospital, Scire was charged with driving under the influence.

Scire teaches language arts in grades 6 through 8 at Explorer K-8 school in Spring Hill, about 50 miles north of Tampa, the Miami Herald said. The Hernando County School District said Scire was “placed on administrative leave pending the results of the ongoing investigation.”

He was released from jail after posting a $1,000 bond.
