Florida Parents, Angry Over Middle School Son’s Battery Charge, Attack School Resource Officer

A Florida couple were arrested Tuesday morning after they attacked a school resource deputy at Deltona Middle School because they didn’t get what they wanted after a meeting with officials about a battery charge filed against their son for shoving a girl a day earlier.

Jorge Rivera and Dagmarie Apointe Iturrino were upset their son had been charged and were dissatisfied after their meeting, so Rivera began screaming at the deputy, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

The couple was asked to leave, but instead of leaving, Itturino shoved the deputy, and Rivera punched her in the head, knocked her to the groud, and took her Taser. The deputy got back to her feet and pulled her service weapon on the couple, ordering Rivera to drop the Taser.

Rivera and Iturrino have been charged with battery on a law enforcemetn officer, resisting with violence, disruption of school function, and trespassing on school campus. Rivera faces additional charges of armed robbery and grand theft for taking the Taser. A hate crime enhancement was added to his charges because of a slur he called the deputy before he punched her.

The couple’s son was present for the entire incident.

“If you’re wondering why some kids show no fear of consequences in today’s society, look n further than these parents as Exhibit A,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said. “I’m glad they’re locked up, and I look forward to them being held fully accountable for this blantant attack on our deputy who was just doing her job.”

Chitwood praised the deputy’s calm response to the attack and said she was treated on the scene and at a hospital for concussion symptoms.

WKMG reported that Iturrino was given an $11,000 bond, and Rivera was being held without bond.
