A Texas mother of two young girls is dead and a man was hospitalized after Luis Antonio Garza allegedly ran both adults over with his truck after getting into an argument over $100.
Garza, 26, is charged with murder as well as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon — his truck — and remains in detention, according to a spokesperson from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office. His bond is set at $1 million.
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, police responded just before 5 p.m. on July 14 to a residence in Edinburg and upon arriving saw one of the victims, Briseida Cobarrubias, 20, lying in the road. Police said they next made contact with the second victim, Jorge Galvan, 27, who explained that he and Cobarrubias “were in an argument with Luis Garza” and that they had begun to walk away from him when Garza got into his green Dodge Ram.
Once in the vehicle, Garza allegedly hit the gas and drove into the man and woman, striking both of them.
Surveillance footage from the neighborhood reviewed by the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office allegedly corroborates what Galvan told police. Police said the video also captured the collision.
Cobarrubias’ mother, Maria Mansano, told local CBS affiliate KVEO that she and her husband are now taking care of their late daughter’s two young daughters. A GoFundMe was set up to help pay for expenses for the grieving family.
“In the afternoon they called us to tell us that they ran her over and when I got there, I saw her face spilling blood from her mouth. It was an argument between the guys and she involved herself,” Mansano said.
Cobarrubias’s father said he and his wife had tried calling their daughter to get together that Sunday afternoon. But she never got back to them. When police notified the woman’s parents, the late woman’s father said he initially thought maybe the crash wasn’t so serious.
Police said Garza waived his Miranda rights and provided a video confession stating that he got into an argument with Galvan “over $100 Jorge owed him.”
“He intentionally drove his truck towards Jorge striking Jorge and Briseida causing her death,” police said.
The 26-year-old man was arraigned Monday and it is unclear when he will next appear in court.
Galvan was sent to a hospital and was treated for minor injuries.
