An angry Papa John’s customer chased an employee around the store with a metal paddle until the pizza man grabbed a pizza spear and stabbed him.
The incident took place just after 10 p.m. Wednesday, when Harford County Sheriff’s deputies were called to investigate a stabbing.
When they arrived, they found Herbert Harris, 40, holding a T-shirt to his stomach and telling them an employee stabbed him, WMAR reported.
But deputies found that wasn’t all of the story. Harris, who lived nearby, had just bought a pizza. He returned to the store to complain when he discovered it didn’t have garlic sauce and pepperoncinis.
In the course of the complaint, Harris got into an argument with 26-year-old Robert Klein, an employee. According to investigators, Harris went behind the counter and shoved Klein, then grabbed a metal pizza paddle and began chasing him around the store.
Klein told deputies he was in fear for his safety, so he grabbed a pizza spear and stabbed Harris. The sheriff’s office said Klein’s action was self defense.
After he was stabbed, Harris reportedly kept yelling at employees.
He was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and later charged with second degree assault.
