Ja’Laya Bryan

A 22-month-old South Carolina toddler has passed away after a dresser fell on her while she played at her grandparents’ home.

According to DailyMail, the incidence happened on July 30 as Ja’Laya Bryan climbed a dresser in her grandparents’ Calhoun Falls home, causing the furniture to topple on her and trap her underneath. Anderson County EMS arrived to find the child in cardiac arrest and rushed her to an area hospital.

Ja’Laya was pronounced dead shortly after at Columbia’s Prisma Health Trauma Services. Her cause of death has been reportedly listed as asphyxiation.

Police do not believe foul play was involved. Family members are now urging others to check furniture and doors to ensure their children are safe indoors.

“PLEASE PLEASE – double check that your furniture it bolted to the wall, doors are closed to keep our littles safe!” the child’s aunt, Debra Putnam-Thompson, wrote on Facebook.

“My beautiful great-great niece, Ja’Laya, 20 months old, loved by everyone with her attitude and precious personality! Life will never be the same, but by Gods grace we will persevere!”

The Anderson County Child Death Investigation Task Force is currently investigating the incident, NBC 7 reports.
