Investigators Execute New Search Warrants at Gilgo Suspect Rex Heuermann’s Long Island Home

Personal items seized during searches of accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann’s Long Island properties have been returned to his family, attorneys say.

“The family is thankful and relieved that they’re starting to get some of their personal property back,” said Bob Macedonio, the attorney for Heuermann’s wife Asa Ellerup, who filed for divorce immediately after Heuermann’s arrest in July 2023 but has been visiting him regularly in jail and attending court hearings.

Macedonio told Newsday that the items being returned are “personal items that prosecutors determined did not have evidentiary value in the prosecution.” The items were seized during searches of Heuermann’s home and storage units.

Macedonio said he picked up items from the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office on September 13, and Ellerup picked them up from his office three days later.

“We received in excess of 50 manila envelopes, in addition to personal electronic devices that were acquired by the family after the arrest of Rex Heuermann,” said Macedonio. “We were told by the district attorney’s office that we would continue to receive personal property of Asa [Ellerup], Victoria [Heuermann] and Christopher [Sheridan] on a rolling basis as it’s processed.”

Macedonio said the items included gifts cards and other personal documents as well as laptops and other electronic devices.

Vess Miteve, who represents the children, confirmed the return of some items but said a large number of books, antiques, clothing, and his clients’ identification documents are still in custody.

Heuermann, 61, has pleaded not guilty to the murders of six women whose bodies were found on Long Island, particularly in the area of Gilgo Beach, as CrimeOnline reported. He is a suspect in a seventh murder.

Hueermann is due in court again next week.
