Fake Social Worker Kidnaps 3-Week-Old Baby

An Ohio woman has been arrested after she allegedly posed as a social worker to kidnap a 3-week-old infant from the child’s mother.

Sapphire McDoughleh, 31, has been charged with felony kidnapping, Canton police said. They also arrested Brandon Savage, 21, and charged him with felony complicity to commit kidnapping, the Canton Repository reported.

The child was recovered unharmed.

Police said the child’s father called them Friday morning after the mother told him that a woman claiming to work for Child Protective Services came to the home and took the child. The father also called CPS and learned that the woman did not work for the agency and that it had no knowledge of anyone taking the child from the home.

Police also confirmed that the woman was not connected with CPS, WOIO said.

Detectives checked license plate readers in the area and found the suspect’s vehicle, which was registered in Conesville in Coshocton County, about 65 miles south of Canton, the Repository said. They alerted the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office, which found the vehicle and stopped it. The baby was inside and was taken to a hospital to be checked out.

Police did not provide a motive for the kidnapping and did not explain if there was any relationship between the suspects and the child’s family.

McDoughleh and Savage are being held on $750,000 bond each.
