Ex-Employee Charged With Fatally Shooting Chinese Restaurant Owner

A former employee of a Virginia Chinese restaurant has been charged with killing the owner and seriously wounding the man’s son.

Emporia Police Chief Ricky Pinksaw said officers responded to the China Garden restaurant at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and found Te Yang dead and his son, Jamie Yang, with multiple gunshot wounds. WTVR reported.

Jamie Yang was flown to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond, Pinksaw said, but he also gave officers a description of the suspect, who was identified as 43-year-old Shawn Rice, an employee of the restaurant until he was fired a few weeks ago.

Police located Rice at a mobile home where he once lived and took him into custody after a brief standoff.

“Rice entered the restaurant, armed with a firearm,” police said. “He shot the Yangs while attempting to take money from them. After doing so, he fled the scene on foot.”

The suspect was charged with first-degree murder, two counts of using a firearm while committing or attempting to commit murder, malicious wounding, robbery, attempted robbery, and use of a firearm by a felon.

Customers were shocked by the violent crime.

“The last time I was here, he told me… the father wanted to retire and sell the business,” Sharon Neigel recalled. “And now he’s passed away. It’s horrible, it’s absolutely horrible.”
