Elderly Woman Found Dead Days After She Vanishes From Assisted Living Facility Without Cameras

An elderly woman who vanished from an assisted living facility last week was found dead on Monday, Georgia officials said.

Patricia Miele, 89, was reportedly last seen on Friday at the Greenwood Assisted Living and Memory Care facility in Marietta. Marietta police confirmed to WSB-TV that her body was recovered from a nearby lake.

Miele was new to the facility and was experiencing memory issues. Police said there was no evidence of Miele leaving the facility — which lacked surveillance cameras.

According to WAGA, a couple who was assisting in the ongoing search for Miele discovered her body floating in a pond at a cemetery in Kennesaw. The pond is a half-mile from the assisted living center.

“As a police officer, it made the investigation incredibly difficult not having any physical evidence that she even left the building,” Marietta police spokesman Chuck McPhilamy said. “We searched the facility five separate times. We searched the grounds roughly twelve times. We did a grid search that included officers from multiple neighboring agencies as well as National Park rangers. Multiple K-9s were deployed.”

There is no indication of foul play. An investigation is ongoing.
