Prominent Oncologist Kills 4-month-old Daughter and Herself in Murder-Suicide

A New York doctor who killed herself and her 4-month-old daughter on Saturday was reportedly experiencing postpartum mental health issues, according to sources.

WLNY reported that Mount Sanai oncologist Dr. Krystal Cascetta, 40, carried out the shooting with her husband’s legally-owned gun. Cascetta’s husband was not home when the doctor allegedly shot herself and her infant daughter at their Somers home.

Reports indicated that Cascetta’s parents were at the home at the time of the apparent murder-suicide, as CrimeOnline previously reported. State Trooper Steven Nevel said whoever heard the two shots eventually gained entry to the locked nursery and discovered Cascetta and her baby. Someone in the home then called 911.

Nevel did not say whether Cascetta was suffering from postpartum depression — but he issued stern words to those spreading rumors about the late doctor’s husband having a role in the shootings.

“The trolls on social media are dragging the husband through the mud. But I can tell you 100 percent unequivocally, without a doubt, that he did not do this,” Nevel told Today.com. “It’s really easy for people to come up with conspiracy theories. He’s been nothing but cooperative. The family has been beyond cooperative.”

Sources have said that Cascetta’s husband was away at the time of the shooting.
