DELPHI VERDICT WATCH: JURY DELIBERATES MURDERS OF ABBY, 13, LIBBY, 14

Richard Allen’s fate now rests with the jury.

Twelve men and women have been tasked with determining, based on the evidence presented, whether Allen is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The burden of proof lies with the state. In her instructions, the judge told the jury that “beyond all possible doubt” is not their standard. She said defendants are not convicted on suspicion, and the jury’s decision must be unanimous.

The defense surprised the courtroom yesterday by resting their case and calling fewer witnesses than expected. Closing arguments concluded by lunchtime today. Just after 1 p.m., the jury went behind closed doors to select a foreperson. Deliberations will continue until 4 p.m. today, unless the jury chooses to stay longer. Sunday is the only day deliberations will not take place,
