Indiana authorities said on Thursday that a suspect confessed multiple times to killing two 14-year-old girls in 2017.
Caroll County Prosecutor Nick McLeland said Richard Allen admitted “five or six times” to killing friends Abby Williams and Libby German, 14, in Delphi. McLeland said Allen made those confessions to multiple people, according to WXIN.
Allen’s defense attorney acknowledged the incriminating statements but blamed them on his client’s worsening mental state, WXIN reported.
Allen is currently behind bars in connection with German and Williams’ 2017 murders. The girls were found murdered near the Monon High Bridge in Delphi after taking an outing to the bridge the day prior.
According to court documents, the Indiana State Police crime laboratory confirmed that an unfired round found between the bodies of the victims came from Allen’s gun. Defense attorneys filed a motion to have this evidence deemed inadmissible, claiming the science that links the crime scene bullet to Allen’s gun is unreliable.
The judge ruled on Thursday that a decision regarding the ballistic evidence will be made at a later date, WTHR reported.

Allen’s trial is scheduled to begin in January 2024.
