Death in Paradise's Don Warrington (pictured on the show in 2022), who plays Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, has given fans of the show a sneak peak ahead of the new season

Death in Paradise star Don Warrington, who plays Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, has given fans of the BBC hit crime drama a major filming update.

The 72-year-old actor revealed filming was well and truly underway as he shared a sneak peak ahead of the new season.

He posted behind the scenes snaps to Instagram, including one image of him next to a police car talking to Ginny Holder’s character Darlene Curtis.

Another picture in the post captioned: ‘Back to work,’ showed Don fully dressed up in character while talking to the man next to him.

The update comes as Don Gilet is gearing up to replace Ralf Little, 44, as the lead of the show, stepping up to the role of Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson.

Don, 57, will make his debut in a feature-length Christmas special later this year, before a brand-new series in 2025 as his character arrives on the idyllic island of Saint Marie from London, and isn’t overly pleased with his new surroundings.

The actor, who is also known for appearing in EastEnders and Sherwood, has begun filming in Guadeloupe, alongside Death in Paradise regulars Don Warrington, Shantol Jackson, Ginny Holder, Élizabeth Bourgine and Danny John-Jules.

Although he doesn’t prominently feature in any of the new pictures shared by his castmate, some fans are guessing it could be him outside the third snap taken outside of a house –  although it’s just the back of someone’s head so it’s difficult to tell.

Don said of his casting: ‘Being offered the new lead role in Death in Paradise feels like a deeply loved and incredibly precious jewel has been placed in my hands.

‘This is a big show, with a big heart and the love continually grows for it. It is my intention to never lose sight of that and to remain grateful, humbled and dedicated.

‘Even during those testing times when every sinew is screaming at me to run off the set and dive into the sea, swimming pool or an ice-cold beer – whichever happens to be closer at the time!’

It comes after former show lead Ralf Little quit the lead role in Death In Paradise after five years with a final appearance in March’s series 13 finale.

In a video posted to his Instagram following the show, Ralf posted a long message to his fans as he said that it was an ‘absolute privilege’ to play DI Neville Parker.

The new casting has left long-time fans of the show divided – while some fans praised the historic choice, with Don being the first lead actor of colour, others branded it a ‘missed opportunity’ after bosses opted not to change tact and cast a woman.

On top of this, Don has already starred in the series in a different role. He first appeared on the show in 2015 – when Kris Marshall was the detective – playing a murderer who killed the owner of a rum distillery during a seance.

Eage-eyed fans were quick to pick up on this detail, sharing their confusion as Don now returns as a detective.

‘Introducing the new Inspector the police station?’

‘Great news – we are watching lots of old episodes at the moment to get our fix.’

‘Yay. Can’t wait for the new season to start and the Christmas show as well.’

‘That’s quite an operation behind the scenes making this great show.’

‘Ahhh, this is why I love the winter season, Christmas etc… Just to watch Death in Paradise.’
