A police officer has shot a man allegedly armed with a knife near one of Australia’s busiest nightlife strips.

Officers and paramedics swarmed Chisholm Street in Darlinghurst on Sunday at 4.40pm, just a few hundred meters from the pubs, clubs, cafes and restaurants of Sydney’s Oxford Street.

Police were responding to a concern for welfare and on arrival, they were allegedly confronted by a man, 32, armed with a knife.

‘The man allegedly approached officers and NSW Ambulance paramedics whilst armed, before a constable discharged their firearm,’ NSW Police said.

‘The man was treated at the scene before being taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a stable condition.

‘A crime scene was established, and a number of residential streets closed.’

Police have now deployed a critical incident team from Leichhardt Police Area Command to investigate all the circumstances surrounding the incident, and whether the officer was justified in firing the weapon.

The investigation will be subject to an independent review.

More to come.
