Cuffed Murder Suspect at Large a Week After Escaping from Hospital While in Police Custody

Police in Washington, D.C. continue to search for a murder suspect who was arrested last week but escaped from custody.

Christopher Haynes, 30, was arrested last Wednesday in Virginia for an August 12 shooting in D.C. that killed Brent Hayward, 33, and left another person injured. WRC reported that Haynes was undergoing questioning when he complained of ankle pain from a prior injury, leading cops to transport him to GW Hospital — where he escaped.

Police said an officer was adjusting Haynes’ handcuffs to cuff one of his hands to a gurney when Haynes allegedly assaulted him and fled with a cuff attached to his right wrist. He reportedly also outran two officers who pursued him.

Multiple sightings have been reported but Haynes has not been apprehended. Security camera footage apparently showed Haynes scaling a fence not far from the hospital he allegedly escaped from.

D.C. police are offering a $30,000 reward for information leading to his capture.

D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith said Haynes may be heading back to Virginia, but he also has ties to Stafford County, Fauquier County, and Prince William County.

Anyone with information regarding Haynes’ whereabouts should call D.C. Metro police at 202-727-9099. Anonymous tips can be sent to the text tip line by messaging 50411.
