Susan Smith: Mom Who Drowned 2 Sons Seeks Parole 30 Years Later

Smith, eligible for parole next year after 30 years behind bars, says she’s changed.

A South Carolina mom serving a life sentence for drowning her two young children in 1994 and trying to blame it on a Black carjacker is carrying on romances with at least six men from her jail cell.

Susan Smith hopes to be paroled next year, the first year she is eligible, after her 1995 conviction but has not gotten much support in that regard from her family, as CrimeOnline previously reported.

Smith was 22 when she strapped her two children — Michael, 3, and Alex, 14 months — into their car seats and let the car roll into John D. Long Lake. Before they were found, Smith appeared on television begging for their safe return.

Now, family members say, she is telling people she’s a changed woman, The Messenger reports. But maybe not, according to those members who say her multiple jail partners is “Susan for you.”

“She’s always had a messy love life,” one relative said. “Some things don’t change. But she seems to be happy.”

The Messenger obtained transcripts of dozens of voice and text messages between Smith and at least six men.

“Dearest Pookie,” one man said in a message on August 13, “Been thinking of you and miss you soooooo much. Hoping I can do something for you soon…Love you so much it hurts, Your Pookie.”

Another man has created a family life for himself and Smith in the digital life similation game “The Sims.” He named their son Michael.

Still another man tells Smith when the woman he lives with is out of the house so she can call him.

The Messenger spoke with two of the men, who asked that they not be identified. The others did not respond.

“I didn’t know that my messages were public,” one of the men said. “I just find her interesting and misunderstood. She’s not what you think she is. She’s a good person who did something terrible when she was young and not in her right mind. People can change.”

The other man told The Messenger it’s no big deal she’s chatting up at least five other men. “I don’t judge her,” he said. “She is free to talk to anyone she wants to. I love her and want her to be happy.”

Several of the men have offered her a place to stay if she is paroled next year. That’s a big if. Her ex-husband — David Smith, the father of Alex and the real Michael — plans to file an affidavit against her release, and several relatives have said they’re not interested in helping her.
