The family of a missing Chicago woman says they haven’t heard from her in over a week, following her trip to Japan.
According to WGN 9, Kandace Schipper, 29, traveled to Japan on May 8 and last contacted her family on June 4. Since then, the family said, they have not heard from her or the man she traveled with, Luis Torres, 27.
“Every single day she had been communicating with family and friends,” Adam Willea, Schipper’s brother-in-law, said. “I mean text, phone calls, pictures, updates, Instagram posts. And then it all abruptly ended on June 4th.”
The family filed a missing persons report with Chicago police, who then reached out to the US Embassy in Japan in an attempt to locate Schipper. However, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police said that they cannot assist unless Schipper fails to catch her return flight home.
“I guess it’s [an] issue because technically, her flight home isn’t scheduled yet. So, until she misses her flight home, they won’t even start a report,” Schipper’s sister, Nicole Willea, said.
“Is she being held somewhere against her will? Is she hurt? There’s nothing we can even do because it’s in Toyko, Japan. We need feet on the ground over there,” Adam Willea told WGN 9.

“We’re here stateside. There’s literally nothing we can do. So, this helpless feeling of not knowing if she is in a hospital, is she being held somewhere against her will? Is she hurt? There’s nothing we can even do because it’s in Toyko, Japan. We need feet on the ground over there.”
