One of Australia’s most feared underworld figures has been attacked with makeshift blade, known as a shiv, in maximum security prison.
Bassam Hamzy, who founded Sydney’s the Brothers 4 Life crime gang, was attacked on Thursday by convicted murderer Ricky McNamara inside the Goulburn Supermax prison.
A handcuffed Hamzy was led into a small, caged exercise yard where McNamara was waiting for him.
Almost as soon as Hamzy entered, McNamara began slashing at him wildly as well as throwing punches, the Daily Telegraph reported.
Prison guards were forced to intervene using chemical sprays to subdue McNamara.

Despite the frenzied violence of the attack, Hamzy escaped with just minor injuries, according to prison authorities.
A Corrective Services NSW spokesperson said Hamzy and McNamara had undergone strict vetting before being put in the yard together.
‘At about 8am on Thursday, 21 December 2023 two inmates were undertaking approved exercise together in the yard at the High Risk Management Correctional Centre in Goulburn,’ the statement said.
‘One inmate assaulted the other inmate who sustained minor injuries as a result.
‘Chemical munitions were deployed and both inmates were secured safely. NSW Police were notified and attended the scene.’
NSW Police are investigating the incident and spokesperson said no charges have been laid at this stage.
Goulburn Supermax, based near the south eastern town of the same name, is the most secure jail in NSW and hosts the state’s most notorious prisoners.
Hamzy has been in prison since being convicted in 1999 for murdering a teenager.

McNamara has a history of attacking other prisoners and in April 2022 he tried to behead an inmate with shivs made from razor blades, after allegedly hearing the man brag about his child sex crimes
The attack was made on Aaron McCurley at Long Bay Correctional Complex in Matraville, Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
McNamara later pleaded guilty to wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder and was handed an extra 12 years in jail with a non-parole period of five years.
This was on top of the 30-year sentence with no parole which McNamara is serving for murder.
