A Maine man is behind bars after police say he killed his girlfriend who was undergoing cancer treatment when she vanished.

Fox News Digital reports that police arrested 39-year-old Jayme Schnackenberg Monday, in connection with the death of his live-in girlfriend, Kimberly Hardy, 42, of Monticello. Hardy’s mother reported her missing earlier this month after her family and friends became concerned for her safety.

According to a missing person post from the Houlton Police Department, Hardy left her “beloved” cat and other personal belongings, including cancer medication, at home before vanishing.

During the investigation, Maine State Police searched a home off Harvey Siding Road, which subsequently led to the discovery of Hardy’s body in the woods. According to Maine Public Radio, game wardens found her body covered in plastic.

“The investigation led to an area of the Harvey Siding Road where a body was discovered by Maine Game Wardens in a wooded area,” police said. “Evidence Response Team members and Detectives will continue to investigate at several scenes.”

Schnackenberg was subsequently arrested at his home in Monticello.

The defendant reportedly told at least two people that he shot Hardy after an argument, but he denied saying that when police questioned him. Investigators, however, found a gun and blood spatter inside his home.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine Hardy’s official cause of death.

Meanwhile, Schnackenberg remains behind bars without bail at the Aroostook County Jail. Check back for updates.
