A welfare check has ended in tragedy and left a tight-knit community in shock following the horrifying discovery of woman’s body inside a home.

Police attended a Melia Street address at Bongaree on Bribie Island north of Brisbane on Thursday night to conduct a welfare check.

A 51-year-old woman was found unresponsive inside the home and declared dead at the scene.

The home was cordoned off as a crime scene as Queensland Police launched an urgent investigation into the woman’s mysterious death and her movements in the 48 hours leading up to when her body was found.

Plain-clothed detectives and forensic officers remained at the home on Friday collecting evidence with the street lined with police vehicles.

Distraught family members were seen outside the home consoling each other as a pet dog was taken away.

Two cars and a caravan parked in the driveway were taped off while locals on the island reported helicopters flying around near Bongaree.

News of the woman’s death has shocked neighbours in the quiet street.

‘The outside lights had been on since earlier in the week,’ one woman told Nine News.

‘That’s the only thing that woke me up to the fact there was something not normal.’

Malcolm Gould who was house-sitting across the road told NewsCorp he was ‘surprised and shocked’.

‘It’s usually a really quiet street,’ he said.

Inquiries into the circumstances of the woman’s death continue.

‘There is no further information available at this stage,’ a police statement read.

Anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage of Melia Street in the 48 hours between Tuesday and Thursday nights are urged to contact PoliceLink or Crime Stoppers.
