At Least 9 Hurt, Including Children, in ‘Random’ Splashpad Shooting in Michigan

At least nine people were wounded Saturday afternoon when a gunman opened fire at a splashpad in Oakland County.

Police say they recovered a 9mm pistol and three empty magazines at the scene and believe they have contained the gunman nearby, the Detroit News reported. They aren’t sure, however, if the shooter has access to more weapons inside. A SWAT team is being assembled.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said the shooter got out of a car at the Brooklands Plaza Splashpad in an apparently random attack. The shooter fired about 28 shots.

The youngest victim is 8-years-old, he said. Investigators don’t know if there are any fatalities. Corewell Health told WJBK it was caring for some victims but declined to provide any further information. Victims have been taken to at least three other hospitals.

WDIV said the shooter appears to be in a mobile home park about 2 miles away in Shelby Township, and investigators don’t know if he is the only person in the home.

Bouchard called the incident a “gut-punch” after the deadly shooting at Oakland High School in 2021 when then 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley killed four classmates and wounded six others and a teacher. Crumbley pleaded guilty and has been sentenced to life in prison but is appealing the sentence.

His parents, Jennifer and James Crumbley, were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter by an Oakland County jury and sentenced to at least 10 years in prison. Their charges stemmed from their complete unwillingness to provide their son any help for obvious mental issues.

This is a developing story. Check back for more information.
