A 26-year-old man in Ohio will spend several decades behind bars for killing a 26-year-old woman and her unborn child, fatally shooting the pregnant victim after getting in an argument with her and her younger brother because the duo were playing with laser pointers in front of their home last summer. A Hamilton County Common Pleas Court judge on Monday ordered Tyrone Hunter to serve 20 to 30 1/2 years in a state correctional facility for the slaying of Isis LeShay Roseman, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.
The sentence came down after Hunter agreed to plead guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of discharge of a firearm on or in a prohibited area. A grand jury had previously indicted Hunter on 24 criminal charges, including multiple counts of murder and felonious assault.
As previously reported by Law&Crime, the incident began on July 6, 2023, when Roseman and her younger brother were “playing with a laser pointer” in the front yard of a home in the 10 block of Kings Run Court in Cincinnati.
While the siblings were playing, Hunter “approached” the duo and “started a verbal altercation about the laser pointer,” prosecutors said. He then threatened to “shoot up” Roseman’s home before leaving the scene in a vehicle.
A short while after the initial altercation, Hunter returned to the Kings Run Court address and “opened fire on the home,” authorities said.
“The victim and her family ran inside their home before a second round of shots were fired at the home,” prosecutors wrote in the release. “At that time, Roseman was shot at least once.”
The fatal bullet traveled through Roseman’s window before striking her.
Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and immediately transported Roseman to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Roseman succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the facility. A subsequent autopsy performed by the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office determined that Roseman was about 16 to 17 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.
At the time of the fatal shooting, Hunter was out of jail after posting bond for two violent felonies and another drug-related felony.
Hunter in 2022 was indicted on one count of felonious assault, one count of improper discharge of a firearm, and several counts of drug trafficking, prosecutors said. A felony magistrate set his bond in that case at 10% of $105,000 on the condition that Hunter wear a GPS tracking device upon his release. However, a trial judge later reduced Hunter’s bond to $10,000 and removed the requirement that he wear a GPS device upon release.
“This is absurd. Criminals must be kept off the streets and remain accountable for their crimes,” Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers previously said in a statement. “This guy took two lives by killing a pregnant victim while out on a $10,000 bond.”
The victim’s mother, Trissa Green, spoke to Newport, Kentucky Fox affiliate WXIX about Hunter’s sentence, saying it didn’t seem harsh enough for what he did.
“It gives me some closure, but I just feel like it should be more for the single fact that he killed my daughter,” Green told the station. “She was pregnant with my granddaughter so he essentially murdered two people.”
