A Wyoming man has been captured in Mexico after Michigan police say he murdered a woman and left her in his apartment.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, Mollie Schmidt, (maiden name: O’Meara) was last seen on August 21 at her Kent residence close to East Beltline Avenue NE and Five Mile Road. The Kent County Sheriff’s Department said Schmidt’s disappearance is unusual because she left behind her children.

At the time of her disappearance, Kent police said Schmidt could be in the company of 44-year-old Yenly Garcia, of Wyoming. It’s not immediately clear how the pair knew each other.

According to Michigan Live, police executed a search warrant at Garcia’s Wyoming apartment and found Schmidt dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

After obtaining cellphone data, investigators determined that Garcia’s phone was in the Ambassador Road area on August 21, in the area where Schmidt was last seen. Search warrants indicate that Garcia was in the 2600 block of 44th Street SW on August 25, where he unsuccessfully tried to use the victim’s bank card at an ATM.

Inside Garcia’s apartment, investigators said they found a .12-gauge shotgun and rounds, along with an AR-15 rifle.

Wyoming police announced this week that Garcia was captured in northern Mexico. U.S. Marshals and Mexican police reportedly worked together to bring the suspect into custody. He’s expected to be extradited back to Wyoming.
