A sheriff’s deputy in Virginia searching for an alleged drunk driver found what he was looking for — when the driver collided with the deputy while heading into oncoming traffic.
The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office announced that it had received a call about a possible drunk driver near the Orange County line, some 65 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., according to a post on Facebook.
“Senior Deputy Tibor Kreiter was in the area of West Catharpin Road and Dulin Lane in Orange County when the suspect vehicle came into his lane of travel striking the deputy’s vehicle head-on at 3:00PM,” the sheriff’s office said.

The driver of that vehicle: 57-year-old John Anthony Fields, of Spotsylvania. Video taken of the crash from the sheriff’s vehicle shows a red truck crossing the double yellow line on the two-lane road before barreling into Kreiter’s SUV. Kreiter tries to swerve out of the way in an apparent attempt to avoid a crash, but the cars make contact anyway.
Video shows debris flying upon impact as Kreiter’s car spins to the left. A picture of the deputy’s vehicle shows at least one wheel was knocked off during the crash.
Fields was arrested for driving under the influence, reckless driving, and failure to drive right side of the highway, the Facebook post said.

Fields was incarcerated in the Central Virginia Regional Jail, the statement said.
“Sheriff Roger Harris is extremely thankful that no serious injuries resulted in the crash and wants to remind drivers who choose to be irresponsible that his deputies will continue to be aggressive in their DUI enforcement,” the sheriff’s office said in the post, reminding readers that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign starts on Dec. 13.
Kreiter was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
