California officials said on Monday that bones discovered last week belong to an animal, not a woman who has been missing since January.
Amador County Sheriff Captain Jarret Benov told KUTV that a forensic anthropologist quickly concluded the bones found in Pioneer last Wednesday were not from a human. Benov said they were not in possession of any human bones, presumably including those of Alexis Gabe, 24, who was possibly killed by her ex-boyfriend Marshall Jones, 27, earlier this year.
Gabe was last seen at Jones’ apartment in Antioch. In June, federal authorities in Washington fatally shot Jones after he threatened them with a knife as they went in to arrest him for murder.
Following his death, Gabe’s family reportedly discovered a handwritten note in Jones’ sister’s trash can. Gabe’s parents said the note, which they believe was penned by Jones, included detailed instructions on how to get to Pioneer, the same city where the bones were discovered last week.

A $100,000 reward is being offered in this case.
