Attorneys for convicted double murderer Alex Murdaugh have filed a request to change his plea on federal financial fraud charges from not guilty to guilty.

The court has scheduled a hearing on September 21 in Charleston, South Carolina, WCSC reports.

Murdaugh was indicted on 22 counts in May. The charges included wire fraud, bank fraud, conspiracy to commit fraud, and money laundering, as CrimeOnline previously reported. The plot entailed conspiring with a local banker and attorney to steal more than $8.7 million.

It’s not clear if his attorneys are trying to work out a deal with prosecutors for the guilty plea. He faces up to 480 years in prison and nearly $13 million in fines.

Murdaugh also faces more than 100 financial fraud charges in state and local courts and is also the defendant in several civil lawsuits.

The disbarred attorney was convicted in March for the June 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. He was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences.
