Ex-South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh was indicted on Tuesday for 22 federal counts of financial fraud which stemmed from him conspiring with a banker to steal money from his former law firm and a slew of clients.
The Greenville News reported that a jury in the U.S. District Court in Charleston handed down various charges against Murdaugh — including wire fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering. The jury founded that Murdaugh conspired three different plots to acquire money and property from his clients while working as a personal injury attorney.
Murdaugh’s alleged plot also entailed conspiring with a local banker and attorney to steal more than $8.7 million. Despite Tuesday’s indictment, Murdaugh still faces 102 charges in state and local courts.
In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office wrote that Murdaugh broke the law by “drafting, or directing law firm employees to draft, disbursement sheets to send settlement funds to Murdaugh’s accounts without proper disclosure or client or law firm approval” and by “intercepting insurance proceeds intended for beneficiaries and depositing them directly into his personal account.”
In March, Murdaugh received two consecutive life sentences for killing his son and wife, Paul and Maggie Murdaugh, at the family’s property in Colleton County. He has appealed those convictions.
