The body of a 17-year-old girl was found on Interstate 94 Friday morning in suburban Detroit.

The girl, whose identity has not been released, had a gunshot wound to the head, Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw told the Detroit News on Saturday.

Police responded to the scene shortly before 8 a.m. on Friday, between Eight Mile and Nine Mile in St. Clair Shores, about 13 miles northeast of Detroit. The freeway was closed for several hours while detectives investigated.

Investigators said they don’t yet know if the girl died on the freeway or if she was brought there after her death, MLive.com reported.

Police ask anyone who may have been in the area at about 3:45 a.m. to call MSP’s Metro North Post at (248) 584-5740. Information can be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
