A 17-year-old New York boy has been charged with murder as a hate crime for the stabbing death earlier this week of a professional dancer who was dancing with friends while refueling their car at a Brooklyn gas station.
New York Police Assistant Chief Joe Kenny said that O’Shae Sibley, 28, and friends were approached by a group of males who demanded that they stop dancing, using homophobic and anti-Black statements, according to Reuters.
Four minutes later, the openly gay Sibley was stabbed in the chest with a “soft, sharp object,” WABC reported.
The 17-year-old, who has not been named, has been charged with murder, hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon.
Kenny told Reuters he is the only person charged in the case and that he turned himself in on Friday.

Beyonce, whose music was playing when Sibley was murdered, wrote, “Rest in Power O’Shae Sibley” on her website, while director Spike Lee posted on Instagram, “Deadly Hate Crime Here in Brooklyn. God Bless You Brother.”
