An 11-year-old Wisconsin boy charged with killing his mother because she wouldn’t buy him a virtual reality headset will stand trial as an adult.
A judge ruled that the boy, who was 10 at the time of the incident last November, was competent to be tried as an adult, WDJT reported.
The boy, who has not been named because of his age, alleged shot 44-year-old Quiana Mann in the face on November 21 and then promptly bought the VR headset from Amazon, as CrimeOnline previously reported.
The boy reportedly first told investigators the gun went off while he was twirling it and then that he had meant to shoot the wall to scare his mother. He has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide and first-degree intentional homicide.
The boy’s attorney argued that he was too young to understand the consequences of his actions or to make decisions about complex legal concepts. A psychologist’s report, however, said that he comprehend the basics of the proceedings.

“[The boy] knew his case was in adult court, he knew that his case was a felony, he knew that there were two types of cases, felonies and misdemeanors. He knew it was serious,” said Assistant District AttorneySara Waldschmidt.
