Alan Shearer and Ian Wright have praised Leeds United for their 1-0 win over relegation strugglers Southampton and how those three points were very much needed.
With a new manager in the dugout in Javi Gracia, playing at Elland Road and against a team at the bottom of the Premier League, then, as Shearer added, ‘it was important’ to get off to that strong start.
And amid Leeds’ struggles up front this season, it was an unlikely goalscorer and winner for the team in left-back Junior Firpo.

However they come, the Yorkshire faithful will take that every day of the week, as it also pushes them outside of the drop zone.
But, of course, there are still going to be plenty of bumps in the road, with West Ham United and Wolves the only other teams picking up points from those in the battle near the bottom.
Nonetheless, this is what Ian Wright and Alan Shearer made of Leeds’ much-needed win, as they told Premier League Productions (25/02/23 at 5:20 pm).
“For Leeds at home, the manager’s first game, it was important to get off to a good start,” said Shearer. “To try and generate some confidence for them.
“I don’t think the keeper will be too pleased when he sees this one back. I know it takes a little deflection and the defender might be in his way.”

Wright added: “You look at the two defenders in the corner there, you can’t let him get out there. It’s poor.
“But, at home, Leeds with the Southampton team coming at the bottom of the league, you had to be winning that game.”

JAVI GRACIA A TOP APPOINTMENT
Those in the Leeds boardroom might have made a mess of sacking Jesse Marsch, and then replacing him, but this is a strong appointment.
The club’s issue is that it comes with an instant negative reaction because of how long they took to replace Marsch.
But, on paper, Gracia did very well at Watford, took them to an FA Cup final and was one of their longest-serving managers during the past ten years.
That says a lot given that the Pozzo family sack a manager after every six months.
