Those of you who have caught the start of Manchester City’s other Champions League games in recent times would have heard booing during UEFA’s anthem for the competition, leaving many puzzled.
So, why do Manchester City fans boo the Champions League song? Let’s take a look…
Why do Manchester City fans boo the Champions League song?
Well, it all started back in 2012.
Manchester City fans began to dislike UEFA after Porto were fined just £20,000 for racist chanting towards Mario Balotelli in a Europa League clash, only for the Citizens to then be fined £30,000 merely due to the fact players were 30 seconds late onto the pitch for another Europa League clash against Sporting Lisbon.
The boos grew louder after UEFA charged Manchester City with a breach of the Financial Fair Play rules, which saw the Citizens forced to pay a £49m fine, enforce a wage cap and also name a smaller Champions League squad.

UEFA then enraged Manchester City again after a bizarre decision regarding a clash against CSKA Moscow in the 2013/14 campaign.
The Russian giants had been ordered to close the Khimki Arena for the game due to racist chanting.
However, UEFA also decided to enforce the ban on Manchester City fans who had planned to attend the game, meaning many had to cancel their arrangements despite already booking travel and accommodation.

At the time, the BBC quoted Vincent Kompany as saying: “Why the hell do we not have any fans here? What have our fans done wrong? There’s no fairness in it.
“You say no fans, all of a sudden you turn up and the team who has no fans is Man City. So who’s getting punished? Who’s being done for racism, Man City or Moscow?”
A similar incident occurred in the 2015/16 campaign as well.
Manchester City supporters knew not to bother making plans for a Champions League clash again Dynamo Kiev as the Ukrainian outfit were serving a stadium ban of their own.
However, UEFA then incredibly decided to overturn the ban just three weeks before it was scheduled to kick off, making it too late for a number of Manchester City fans to make travel arrangements in order to attend.
Clearly, there is a lot of bad blood between Manchester City and UEFA – if you heard the boos against Bayern Munich, you now know the story behind it.
