Any Liverpool fans who watched Brighton’s clash against Chelsea on Saturday may have been confused to hear the name of Cody Gakpo ring around Stamford Bridge.
The £35m Liverpool man was the subject of chants from Brighton supporters as the Seagulls recorded a 2-1 win in west London, but why? Let’s take a look…
What’s the story?
Well, Brighton are not signing Gakpo if that’s what you were thinking.
Those in charge of the screens at Stamford Bridge strangely managed to name the Netherlands international instead of Danny Welbeck when the England international came on for the injured Evan Ferguson in the 39th minute.
In response, the Brighton fans started to sing “Cody Gakpo, he’s one of our own” as Welbeck jogged on to the pitch.

So, for any Liverpool fans who were confused about hearing their No.18’s name being sung at Stamford Bridge, the situation has now been explained.
Cody Gakpo in the spotlight
Gakpo’s name was chanted in west London just days after Jamie Carragher put him in the spotlight when making a point about Jude Bellingham.
The Sky Sports pundit wrote in the Telegraph that it was a “baffling” decision from Liverpool to sign the 23-year-old in January when it was the midfield that was in desperate need of strengthening, not the attack.
Carragher added that Gakpo’s arrival was the first time he had questioned Liverpool’s transfer policy.

The 45-year-old wrote: “Cody Gakpo signed for £40m in January, even though the side was crying out for more midfield energy. Gakpo has made a promising start. I like him, but now it is even more baffling that another striker was prioritised. Most supporters would have willingly accepted the Gakpo outlay being kept back to turn a £90m Bellingham bid into a £130m signing.
“This is the first time I have openly questioned Liverpool’s transfer policy during the Klopp era.”
The Dutchman has shown flashes of his talent with four goals in 12 Premier League appearances since arriving from PSV Eindhoven, although supporters surely would have preferred to see that £35m spent on a new midfielder as Carragher states.
