The late jazz musician enjoyed a lengthy career that spanned decades.

Who was Wayne Shorter?
Born on August 25, 1933, Wayne Shorter was an American jazz composer and instrumentalist from Newark, New Jersey.
During the late 1950s, he achieved his career breakthrough as a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.
He joined Miles Davis’ band The Second Great Quintet in the following decade.
In 1970, Shorter co-founded his longest-tenured band Weather Report.


Weather Report remained active until they split in 1986 to pursue other projects.
Regarding his take on the jazz genre of music, Shorter told NPR: “Jazz shouldn’t have any mandates. Jazz is not supposed to be something that’s required to sound like jazz.

“For me, the word ‘jazz’ means, ‘I dare you.’ The effort to break out of something is worth more than getting an A in syncopation.
“This music, it’s dealing with the unexpected. No one really knows how to deal with the unexpected. How do you rehearse the unknown?”
Due to his collaborations with Joni Mitchell, Carlos Santana, and Steely Dan, Shorter also experienced much crossover popularity.
On September 14, 2018, Shorter released his final studio album Emanon.
When did Wayne die?
On March 2, 2023, Shorter’s death was confirmed by his publicist.
At the time of his passing, the famed saxophonist was 89 years old.

He is survived by his daughter Miyako and his third wife Carolina Dos Santos.
Throughout his lifetime, Shorter was the recipient of 12 GRAMMY Awards.
