Who was Searching for Sugarman’s Sixto Rodriguez?
Sixto Rodriguez, known professionally as Rodriguez, was a popular singer-songwriter who was born on July 10, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan.
He began his career in the late 1960s and found much success overseas, but it wasn’t until the 2012 Oscar-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man that he garnered attention from American audiences.
The documentary, which was written and directed by Malik Bendjelloul, detailed Rodriguez’s journey from an unknown musician to an international superstar.
“It’s been a great odyssey,” he said of his career during a 2008 interview with The Detroit News.
“All those years, you know, I always considered myself a musician. But, reality happened.”
In the 1970s, he recorded two albums- Cold Fact and Coming From Reality- in Detroit, but they flopped on the US charts so he went on to start a career in politics after graduating from Wayne State University.
However, in 1979, he was asked to perform in Australia, and then again in 1981.
Years later, he discovered that there were websites dedicated to him in South Africa, and a rock journalist by the name of Craig Bartholomew had been searching for him for years, according to The Detroit News.
“I told him, ‘In South Africa, you’re bigger than Elvis,'” his fan, Stephen Segerman, told the outlet.
After this discovery was made, Rodriguez got back into the game by re-releasing his albums and performing at large venues.

“The world is such a big place and there’s enough for everyone,” Rodriguez said.
“More than enough. To say you want it all ― there’s just so much to share and the beautiful part of it is I get to share this with so many people.”
When did Sixto Rodriguez die?
Rodriguez’s death was first confirmed in a statement posted on his official website, Sugarman.org.
“It is with great sadness that we at Sugarman.org announce that Sixto Diaz Rodriguez has passed away,” the statement read.
“We extend our most heartfelt condolences to his daughters – Sandra, Eva and Regan – and to all his family.”

While his death might’ve been confirmed, a cause was not released.
He passed away on August 8, 2023, at the age of 81.
“May His Dear Soul Rest In Peace,” the statement added.

Konny Rodriguez is best known as the second wife of Rodriguez.
They married in 1984 and went on to have one child together, Regan.
Prior to his marriage to Konny, he welcomed two daughters, Eva and Sandra, with his first wife, Rayma Rodriguez.
