What has Ali Liebert said about being LGBTQ in Hollywood?
Ali Liebert has played a number of queer roles before officially coming out as lesbian, telling LezWatchTV that she used to be “gay for pay.”
It wasn’t until her role in Bomb Girls that led her to a personal revelation about her own identity.
“It was like myself delivered to myself in a very gentle way. And after I had finished that show and had a moment to breathe I was like, oh my God, this is a real thing,” she said.
“And it was as scary as probably a lot of people feel when they’re realizing that they are. And also I was, you know, 30-something. It had been years coming and when I did decide to come out on Instagram, it was a very… It was something I really wanted to do and it felt really natural.”
Liebert has since made an effort to play more queer characters in film to bolster LGBTQ representation.
“I think having a specific space for conversation that promotes and celebrates work that uplifts queers is really important,” the actress told Go.
“It’s more important to me now, being queer myself and also portraying queer people in TV and film and having a space where people can speak to how they feel in being represented.
“Actors, writers and directors can use our voices to promote a representation of our community. It’s important to see how folks feel about that.”
In 2023, Liebert starred in Hallmark’s first holiday film featuring a lesbian couple, Friends and Family Christmas, opposite Humberly Gonzalez.
In an interview with News Is Out, Liebert said that the project was a dream come true.
“I’ve been wanting – and I’ve been stating it on Twitter for at least five years – waiting for the moment when there was a holiday movie for the lesbians. And that I was praying that Hallmark would put me in it.
“For me, it’s been a really nice bow tie to my wish. Because I think that we deserve to be represented in all types of media, including holiday movies.
“For me, it was really meaningful and I felt really lucky that so many of the team were queer and that our leading lady, this wonderful woman right here, we were the perfect people to do it.
“I feel really honored. And it’s meaningful to me because I’ve just wanted this to happen for a really long time.”
