The Lampard Transition has began to trend once again after the 44-year-old made a stunning return to Chelsea.
Todd Boehly has decided to bring Lampard back to Stamford Bridge on an interim basis after handing Graham Potter his P45 on Monday, while those in west London attempt to find a long-term replacement.
You may have seen a number of people talking about the Lampard Transition on social media as he returns to Chelsea, but what does it actually mean? Let’s take a look…
The Lampard Transition
Well, the Romford-born tactician has made quite the habit of cracking a joke during his interviews, before hilariously switching straight back to a more serious tone.
In fact, Lampard has done it so many times, that there is even a Twitter thread dating back to November 2014 showing a number of examples of the now iconic transition from lightheartedness to seriousness.
It was Adam Hurrey of The Athletic who created the thread, which has since gone viral in the football world.
You can see a handful of them below.

As you can see, Lampard can’t seem to help himself when it comes to delivering a quick joke during his interviews, before immediately snapping back into business mode.
Gary Lineker even caught wind of the Lampard Transition.
The 62-year-old delivered his own version of the internet phenomenon while hosting Match of the Day back in February 2022.
You can see Lineker’s effort below.
It is genuinely quite fascinating to see how often Lampard does this – it has become a staple of his interviews throughout both his playing career as well as his time in management.
Now – after his shock return to Chelsea – fans of the Lampard Transition should be given plenty of new material to work with as we approach the business end to the campaign.
