Shadow And Bone season 2 introduces fans to Durasts but what exactly are they and how do their powers compare to other Grisha?
As a fantasy series, Netflix’s Shadow And Bone is packed full of rival factions, magical powers and unusual terminology that fans need to keep track of.
Season 2 of Shadow And Bone is no different as it introduces a new type of Grisha known as Durasts and understandably viewers have been left with plenty of questions about the beings and their abilities.
Durasts introduced in Shadow And Bone season 2
While we’ve already met a number of Grisha in Shadow And Bone, the newly released second season introduces a new type of the Small Science wielders known as Durasts.
The opening episode in particular makes a point to reference the type of Grisha with the surprise revelation that Jesper has been a Durast all along but has kept it a secret from everyone, except for the keen-eyed Kaz, of course.
On top of that, Alina also crosses paths with a Durast during her and Mal’s dangerous exploits in Novyi Zem when she meets a woman named Keme.

What is a Durast in Shadow And Bone?
Durasts are a type of Grisha that can manipulate solid matter such as glass, steel, wood, plants and stone.
Belonging to the Materialki Order, Durasts’ abilities allow them to control objects such as bullets and machinery in battle while they can also make flowers bloom, remove color pigments from objects and even make items move without touching them.
Durasts are denoted by the purple keftas they wear which feature gray embroidery.

The word Durast is derived from the Latin word ‘durus’, meaning ‘solid, hard, or strong,’ which reflects their ability to work with solid materials.
Despite keeping his identity as a Durast secret from the other Crows, Jesper’s true nature is revealed when he and Kaz are captured by the pirate Sturmhond and Kaz tosses his friend a metal coin which he turns into a lockpick so that they can escape.

Other types of Grisha
Beyond Durasts, there is a whole swathe of different Grisha, all of whom have varying abilities and fall within certain Orders.
