What happened on the set of Alec Baldwin’s movie Rust?
In 2021, Alec Baldwin was working on the set of the upcoming American Western film Rust.
While shooting one of the scenes, Baldwin accidentally shot director of photography Halyna Hutchins and director-writer Joel Souza with a prop gun.
In a statement first given to The Sun, Santa Fe County Sheriff Juan Rios revealed: “The sheriff’s office confirms that two individuals were shot on the set of Rust.
“Halyna Hutchins, 42, director of photography and Joel Souza, 48, director, were shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin, 68, producer and actor.”
It’s believed that the prop gun discharged either shrapnel or a bullet, hitting both of the victims.
Souza survived but Hutchins tragically died at the University Of New Mexico Hospital.
Is the incident under criminal investigation?
Since the shooting occurred, local law enforcement officers have been investigating and trying to determine what happened.
It was then announced on January 19, 2023, that Baldwin will be charged with involuntary manslaughter, according to The New York Times.
Baldwin’s lawyer, Luke Nikas, released a statement and said: “This decision distorts Halyna Hutchins’s tragic death and represents a terrible miscarriage of justice.
“Mr. Baldwin had no reason to believe there was a live bullet in the gun — or anywhere on the movie set. He relied on the professionals with whom he worked, who assured him the gun did not have live rounds. We will fight these charges, and we will win.”

Baldwin has cooperated with investigators since the shooting but previously said in a phone call that he is “not responsible for what happened to [Halyna].
Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film’s armorer, will also be charged with involuntary manslaughter, The New York Times notes.
If convicted, Baldwin could face 18 months in jail and a $5,000 fine.
Dave Halls, the film’s first assistant director, was the one who gave Baldwin the gun and he also faced charges but agreed to a plea deal in exchange for a suspended sentence.
In the plea, Hall admitted that there was “sufficient evidence to convict him of negligent use of a deadly weapon,” according to The New York Times.
In a statement, Hall’s lawyer said that “he can now put this matter behind him and allow the focus of this tragedy to be on the shooting victims, their family and changing the industry so this type of accident will never happen again.”
At this time, it is unclear when Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed will appear in court.
