The expected peak bloom of Washington DC’s iconic cherry blossoms has been confirmed – here’s how to see them and plan your visit.
On Wednesday (March 1, 2023), the National Park Service announced the expected blooming period of the iconic cherry blossoms at Tidal Basin.
Every year, the city draws visitors from all over the country who travel to witness the blossom explosion in white and pink colors.
Here’s everything you need to know, including the confirmed dates.

Peak bloom dates for Cherry Blossoms
The projected peak bloom dates for the iconic cherry blossoms are between March 22 and 25, 2023.
In a Facebook post, the NPS said the peak bloom is “the period of time when 70% of the Yoshino cherry blossoms – the most common variety – are open, creating gorgeous clouds of white and pink flowers floating around the Tidal Basin.”
The expected blossoms normally happen the last week of March or the first week of April depending on weather conditions.
Due to cold or warm temperatures, in 1990 the blossoms arrived early on March 15, while back in 1958 the peak bloom occurred on April 18.

Make sure to pencil in the above dates and plan your visit to Tidal Basin in late March. For more details about the Yoshino trees and how to plan your visit to Washington, you can check out the guidelines on the website of NPS.
How long is the peak bloom?
The NPS said cherry trees typically bloom for a period of several days. The length of the blooming period depends on the weather.
For example, the peak bloom in 2022 happened on March 25, while the year before it was on March 28. Normally, cherry tree blossoms will last for around two weeks.
Cooler and calmer weather conditions can extend the period of cherry blossoms, while warmer temperatures can speed up the blossoms. Rainy, windy, and frost conditions can severely reduce the length of the blooming period.
In a follow-up Twitter post, the NPS explained: “The cherry trees have progressed to florets visible, the 2nd of 6 stages. Depending on the weather, peak bloom should be around 3 weeks away!”
More about the cherry blossom tradition
Washington, DC’s cherry blossom watch has been a tradition for years and symbolizes the capital city’s natural beauty.
Japan gifted the US around 3,000 cherry trees in 1912 as a symbol of friendship between the two countries. The gorgeous pink and white blooms have since become a signal for the arrival of spring in Washington.
