Oscars 2023: Vanity Fair meaning amid Hugh Grant and Ashley Graham

Ashley Graham and Hugh Grant’s awkward 2023 Oscars red carpet interview has gone viral and the constant mention of “Vanity Fair” has led to many fans wanting to know the meaning behind it.

The 95th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre and had some of Hollywood’s biggest names in attendance. Host Jimmy Kimmel opened the Oscars, where he mocked last year’s ceremony when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on the stage.

Hugh Grant‘s Oscars 2023, interview saw him make reference to “Vanity Fair,” which appeared to confuse interviewer Ashley Graham.

Many have sided with Graham and are left scratching their heads as to what the meaning of “Vanity Fair” actually is, let’s take a look.

Meaning behind Vanity Fair

Vanity Fair was a reference made by Hugh Grant at the Oscars 2023 during a cringe-worthy interview with Ashley Graham.

He was referring to the 1848 novel, Vanity Fair, by William Makepeace Thackery, which is about members of the elite, shallow society, who gather together and gossip.

Vanity Fair is often used to describe luxurious social events, designed for the rich. It is described as a “fair that goes on perpetually in the town of Vanity and symbolizes worldly ostentation and frivolity.” Grant used the term to seemingly make a quip at the Academy Awards.

Ashley Graham’s interview with Hugh Grant sparked controversy over the “Vanity Fair” moment. Which saw Ashley assume Hugh was voicing his excitement for The Vanity Fair Oscar Party. However, it was later discovered that the actor was making reference to something else entirely.

Hugh was one of the first celebrities that Ashley interviewed on the red carpet. However, his responses have sent the interview viral. The moment in question features Ashley Graham asking what he thinks of the award ceremony. To which he responds by saying: “It’s fascinating. The whole of humanity is here. It’s Vanity Fair.”

Ashley, clearly confused, responded: “Oh yes, it’s all about Vanity Fair, that’s where we need to let loose and have a little fun.”

The model asked what the actor was looking forward to and who he wanted to see win an Academy Award, and he replied: “no one in particular”.

Trying to save the conversation she asked: “Who are you wearing tonight?”

To which Hugh bluntly replied: “My suit.”

She then asked: “What was it like to be in Glass Onion? How fun is it to shoot something like that?”

To which he quipped back: “Well I’m barely in it, I was in it for about three seconds.”

Ashley exclaimed: “But you showed up and you had fun right?”

To which Hugh responded: ‘”Erm… almost.”

Some think that Grant shut down the chat and rolled his eyes at her at the end of the conversation.
