Tim Sherwood has said on Sky Sports News (2pm, March 18, 2023) that Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk has completely changed.
The former Tottenham Hotspur manager believes that Van Dijk has not been at his best for Liverpool so far this season
Sherwood noted that the Netherlands international centre-back really struggled against Bournemouth in the Premier League earlier this month.
Liverpool went down 1-0 to the Cherries, who have been one of the worst teams in the Premier League this season and could get relegated to the Championship.
Tim Sherwood on Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk
Sherwood said about Van Dijk, as transcribed by TBR: “Van Dijk is unrecognisable though, isn’t he? Certainly in that game at the weekend, he was getting stood up.
“When your full-backs would push forwards he would just control it and he was happy to defend on his own. Now he needs cover around him either in front of he needs the full-backs to tuck in.

HITC Verdict: Start afresh
In our view, Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk needs to forget about this season and start afresh in the summer.

The Dutchman has been off his game for a while now, and we believe that he needs a bit of a break.
Now, we know how good Van Dijk is.
And Liverpool need the former Celtic star at his best.
Liverpool are very much in the running for the Premier League top four.
Van Dijk remains a key figure in manager Jurgen Klopp’s team.
And he will have to do his best between now and the end of the season, before working hard in the summer to get himself back to his best for the next campaign.
