Hapa meaning explained as GQ

A recent GQ article of TXT has caused outrage among MOAs aka TXT fans who talked about the usage of the word ‘Hapa’ in the article for the member Huening Kai. Here we take a quick look at ‘Hapa’ meaning and if the word is a slur.

BigHit Music’s TXT consisting of Yeonjun, Soobin, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Huening Kai debuted in 2019 and since then made a name for themselves as one of the most important fourth-generation K-pop voices who bring the stories of Gen Z.

From making new Billboard history to charting multiple albums in Billboard 200, TXT aka Tomorrow X Together has proven their impact within just four years of debut.

Hapa meaning explained as Huening Kai of TXT was described using the Asian slang word

The word ‘Hapa’ essentially means someone of mixed race or multi-racial. The word Hapa comes from the Hawaiian term ‘Hapa Haole’ which means half white.

TXT’s GQ article caused a stir on social media as fans discussed the usage of the word ‘Hapa’ to describe member Huening Kai who carries a multi-racial identity. Originally the description of Huening Kai read, “the Hapa who makes everyone laugh” which was later changed to “the multiracial one who makes everyone laugh.”

Is Hapa a slur?

While the debate remains if Hapa can be considered a slur, many Asians do not like to use the word as it means ‘half white’ and not mixed race, so it can be factually incorrect to call any multi-racial Asian ‘Hapa.’

A Reddit user explained, “Hapa comes from the Hawaiian term Hapa Haole, literally half white. Hapa, we aren’t all half, There are quarters, three-quarters, and all sorts of ratios. Haole itself is usually used as an offensive term toward white people!”
