Conte and Zidane

Tottenham are on the lookout for a new manager after parting company with Antonio Conte last week.

The Italian left Spurs by mutual consent in wake of an underwhelming and frustrating campaign at N17.

Things came to a head after Tottenham’s last game, the 3-3 draw with Southampton before the international break.

Conte dropped an explosive post-match interview in which he criticised the players, ownership and club culture.

In terms of a successor, the names of several managers have been doing the rounds for weeks now.

According to Sky Sports Italia, Zinedine Zidane is on the radar of the Tottenham board.

The 50-year-old has been out of work since leaving Real Madrid for the second time at the end of the 2020-21 season.

During his first spell at the Bernabeu, Zidane won three Champions League trophies in a row.

He was also linked with the France role before Didier Deschamps penned an extension with the 2018 champions.

Zidane and Conte are also close friends from their time playing at Juventus in the 1990s.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the former Spurs boss labelled the France and Real icon an “exceptional man”.

The report from 2020, ahead of Real’s Champions League match with Inter Milan, also said: ‘These old friends have shown a relationship that, more than two decades on since they shared the Juventus midfield, is stronger than ever.’

Great manager, bad option for Spurs?

Zidane is undoubtedly an incredible manager, but he may not necessarily be the best option for Tottenham.

Spurs have tried their luck with marquee coaches who boast incredible winning records, and it just hasn’t worked out.

In addition, it’s not unreasonable to assume Zidane would have a word with Conte about what it’s like working at Spurs.

Needless to say, Conte has already made his feelings clear about Tottenham.

Perhaps someone like Julian Nagelsmann, a young manager who enjoys working on a project, might be a better shoutl.
