Tottenham transfer news: Reliable journalist says Spurs

The Athletic journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke has said that Tottenham Hotspur could have nearly signed Sadio Mane before he joined Liverpool.

The £34 million (Guardian) man is regarded as one of the greatest wingers in Premier League history, scoring 111 times in the division whilst being a mainstay in one of the most elite sides for years the country has ever seen.

However, before Sadio Mane put pen to paper to sign for Liverpool, it seems like he was edging towards a switch to Tottenham.

Tottenham could have signed Mane before he signed for Liverpool

From the day he signed on the dotted line for the Reds, Mane seemed like a perfect fit, with Jamie Carragher labelling him as his ‘favourite player.’

Despite the Senegalese legend himself being injured for Bayern Munich and perhaps looking past his brilliant best this season, Paul Merson still believes the club crumbled after his sale in the summer.

But now Jack Pitt-Brooke has told the Athletic’s ‘The View From The Lane’ podcast that Tottenham could have signed Sadio Mane before his transfer to Liverpool in 2016.

Wilfried Zaha, they tried to sign him in 2016, they made a real lowball offer that annoyed Steve Parish. At that point Spurs needed one more really explosive final third player.”

“If they signed Zaha I think he would’ve been fantastic. The other forward they looked at in 2016 and they nearly got him I think, was Sadio Mane who has obviously turned out to be an unbelievably good footballer.”

Mane could have taken Son’s place

While Son Heung-min has been an outstanding player for Tottenham for all these years, ex-Liverpool wideman Sadio Mane has a case for having been a much more complete player.

And especially under Mauricio Pochettino’s guidance, who has a penchant for taking wingers to the next level, the AFCON champion would perhaps have reached the heights he did under Jurgen Klopp.

Thankfully for Son, the move did not happen and his spot at left wing was never under threat.
