Speaking on Michael Calvin’s Football People Podcast, Emi Martinez has been discussing his own goal against Arsenal and his reaction after the game.
Martinez had no luck at all against his former club last month as a last minute long-range strike from Jorginho ricocheted off of the crossbar before hitting him on the back of the head and going into the net.
This goal cost Aston Villa a vital point against the Gunners, and after the game the Argentine was critical of his own performance.
Indeed, Martinez says that the first thing he did after the game was to apologise to his teammates, stating that he believed he had cost his team the game.

“Even now, I was critical of myself the other day against Arsenal even though that was probably the unluckiest goal I’ve had in my career. I was the first person to be critical and to apologise to all of my teammates. It was a mistake? No, but I lost the game for my team and I am the first one to apologise, sometimes it can be bad for me to be too critical,” Martinez said.
Harsh
Martinez has been a bit harsh on himself here. This was not a mistake, it was just bad luck.
However, in a way, this goes to show the mentality you need to have to be a champion at the highest level, you have to hold yourself to the highest of standards in every single situation.
Martinez always wants to do better, and that’s why he has improved so much over the past two years and cemented himself as one of the world’s best goalkeepers these days.
