Glenn Hoddle has praised Emerson Royal for his turnaround in performances at Tottenham Hotspur and how he is now a ‘different player’.
The Tottenham legend added that Pedro Porro’s arrival during the January transfer window seems to have sprung the 24-year-old into life because he looks like a ‘new player’ for Antonio Conte.
In his last six matches, Emerson Royal has scored two goals and helped his team secure a much-needed four clean sheets in their quest to secure Champions League football again.
During the winter transfer window, Spurs booted out Matt Doherty, who joined Atletico Madrid, with Porro, after a few scares, eventually joining on deadline day from Sporting Lisbon.
It was obvious to all that Porro arrived to make that right-sided wing-back role his own, but fast forward to the present, and the one-cap Spain star had a disaster debut at Leicester City and he might now have to wait to dethrone Royal from the starting XI.
That’s largely down to how well the Brazil international is defending, the efficiency in his attacking play and how he is no longer error-prone, with Hoddle sharing his own praise, as he told Premier League Productions (26/02/23 at 1:15 pm).
“Since Porro’s arrived, he has become a different player,” said Hoddle. “No disrespect, he hasn’t shown that standard, in recent games, (since he arrived).
“It just makes me smile. It makes me think ‘why have you been waiting for somebody you feel threatened by before you start getting the best out of yourself?’

“To be fair to him, he has been very consistent. Defensively and with the ball. It’s almost like Tottenham have suddenly signed a new player. I have got to say that.
“Some of his play defensively, it was poor. He wasn’t switched into the Premier League. It was too quick at times – some of his play with the ball has been excellent. He has that little bit of freedom and confidence to get himself forward. He had an awful spell at the start of the season and the crowd were getting on his back. And I felt sorry for him.”

Emerson Royal deserves credit for his recent form, but it now has to continue until the end of the season, rather than it just being a breeze coming through the campaign.
Spurs were right to bring in Porro because that right-sided wing-back role has been a problem area for the club for many years.
Some would argue that Kieran Trippier still hasn’t been replaced, with many names struggling over long periods, but has Conte now finally found his two men to battle it out for that one spot?!
