What was the Spotify DJ prank for April Fool

Music lovers tuning into Spotify DJ on the first of the month were tricked by a surprise April Fool’s prank.

The start of spring can bring many joys, from chocolate treats to celebrate Easter to longer days and warmer weather. But it also promises the return of April Fool’s Day.

Each year, the start of the spring month is marked by an opportunity to prank those around you. It is tradition to carry out practical jokes and hoaxes on April 1, fooling your intended before shouting out “April Fool’s!”

If you thought the pranks were just limited to family and friends, you’d be wrong. Brands often participate in the fun and games, pranking their customers. Spotify was one such organization that joined in this year’s fun.

What was the Spotify DJ April Fool’s prank?

On April 1, 2023, Spotify harnessed the power of their new artificial intelligence-led DJ tool to prank their subscribers. They started rolling out the Spotify DJ mode feature last month, but it still remains unavailable in most markets.

Anyone who was tuned into Spotify DJ on April 1 were tricked by the feature dropping thousand-year-old Gregorian chants into their personalized mix.

“Next up, here’s something that was tearing up the charts 1100 years ago,” the AI DJ reportedly said on the mix.

What was the Gregorian chant?

For anyone who missed out on the Spotify DJ April Fool’s, you might be wondering what the song was that the streaming platform included in the prank.

One of the tracks selected was Te Deum by the Benedictine Monks of the Abbey of St. Maurice & St. Maur, Clervaux. This track now has over 1.2 million streams on Spotify. April Fool’s might just have turned a few music lovers onto the centuries-old sacred songs.

Those subjected to the prank reported there were other songs in the mix too. If you weren’t presented with Te Deum, you could have received A Marie, Mère de Dieu led by Dom Le Feuvre and the Benedictine Monks Choir of Abbey Of Kergonan.

‘Best April Fool’s this year’

Spotify’s prank went down a treat with listeners, some calling it the “best April Fool’s bit this year.”

“This is the funniest April Fool’s thing Spotify can do,” one listener tweeted.

“The mf got me for real,” another added.
